MARK S. BARNES has practiced law with Bugbee & Conkle, LLP since 2001. In recent years, Mark has concentrated his practice in workers’ compensation litigation and has successfully defended employers in trials throughout Ohio. In addition, Mark has argued and won numerous cases in the state courts of appeals and in the Ohio Supreme Court. Mark frequently lectures throughout Ohio at seminars for various educational institutes, bar associations, and employer groups regarding matters of workers’ compensation, trial practice, employment law, and legal ethics.
Mark attended the University of Virginia, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Rhetoric and Communication Studies in 1986. In 1994, Mark received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maryland. In 1995, Mark was admitted to practice law in Ohio. In 2001, the Ohio Supreme Court appointed Mark to a five-year term on its Board of Bar Examiners, a committee of lawyers and judges which sets policy for and prepares the Ohio bar examination. Mark is an active member of the Northwest Ohio Human Resource Association (NOHRA) and sits on its board as the association’s legislative chairperson. Mark also is a member of the Toledo & Ohio State Bar Associations, the ProMedica Communities Board, the ProMedica Physicians & Continuum Services Board, the Northwestern Ohio Self-Insurers’ Association (NWOSIA), and is the former president and treasurer of the Thurgood Marshall Law Association.
Mark has resided in the Toledo area since 1994 and is married with three children. Outside his law practice, Mark enjoys art, golf, bowling, and physical fitness. Each year, Mark participates in the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run to raise money for arthritis and has been honored by the organization for his outstanding fundraising efforts.
